With a string of beautiful spring days ahead of us, this is the time of year when the gardening gloves come out and plant lovers start getting their hands dirty. Given that we live in the “Garden City,” it should come as no surprise that plant sales are sprouting up all over town. 

Grab some native plants to support local bees and butterflies, or embrace your food sovereignty by growing your own fruits and vegetables. Want something low-maintenance? A cactus or succulent might be up your alley. All these options and more are or will be available at plant sales and shows around Greater Victoria over the next two weeks.

If you want to wait until the May long weekend—the unofficial start of gardening season for some—you can pick up seeds that will be ready to grow when you’re ready to plant them.

Edible Plant Sale: Peppers, Cucumbers, and Tomatoes | May 2-4 

Grab these tasty fruits—which are often mistaken for vegetables—at the Victoria Edible Nursery at Mason’s Farm. 

Swan Lake Native Plant Sale | May 3-4

This massive native plant sale—one of the largest on the Island—has a variety of plants that perfectly suit a Garry oak ecosystem.

Peninsula Garden Club Plant Sale | May 3

Head to St. Andrew's Anglican Church in Sidney to shop annuals, perennials, veggie starts, and more. 

Victoria Cactus and Succulent Society Spring Show | May 9-10

Shop succulents and learn plant-care tips from experts at Church of the Advent in Colwood. 

Compost Education Centre Plant Sale | May 10

The annual all-organic plant sale is back. Head to Haegert Park—one block from the CEC—to explore varieties of heirloom tomatoes, zucchini, and herbs while listening to live music. 

Gordon Head Garden Club | May 10

Plants, tools, and gardening advice can all be found at this sale at the Gordon Head Lawn Bowling Club. 

Ross Bay Villa Plant Sale | May 10

The historic house is known for its beautiful gardens—recreate it at home with flowers, herbs, and shrubs curated by volunteers.

Sooke Garden Club Plant Sale | May 10

Head to Evergreen Shopping Centre to check out this annual sale.

Horticultural Centre of the Pacific: Tomato Day | May 17

There will be multiple varieties of tomato starts to help you kick off your veggie garden.

View Royal Garden Club Mini Show | May 21

Roses, azaleas, irises, and more will be available at the Esquimalt United Church, Lower Hall. 

Correction: Peninsula Garden Club will be hosting their sale at St. Andrew's Church in Sidney, not Mary Winspear Centre.
